GEOWEEK2022 Conference

Welcome to GEOSYM 2022

Faculty of Geomatics (FOG) of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) will host the 2nd International Symposium on Geo-Informatics (GEOSYM) 2022 on 30th November and 1st December 2022 via fully online platform. This is one of the main academic events to be organized during the GEOWEEK-2022 celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Faculty of Geomatics.

The theme "Geo-Informatics for conquering new frontiers towards national development" is the focus on GEOSYM 2022.

Objectives

To Provide a Platform in Sri Lanka for Local and International Researchers and Academics in the Field of Geo-Informatics to Disseminate their Research Findings.

To Strengthen the Network Among Young Researchers, Local and Foreign Geo-Informatics Experts.

To Encourage Interaction and Exchanging Ideas Among Professionals, Researchers, Academics and Students in the Field of Geo-Informatics.

Keynote Speaker
Prof. Vassilis Gikas

Prof. Vassilis Gikas

Vassilis Gikas holds a diploma in Rural and Surveying Engineering NTUA (1993) and a PhD in Geodesy from Department of Geomatics, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK (1996). He is a Professor at the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, where he was first appointed in 2004. His previous appointments include a research position in the Department of ‘Geomatics’ at the University Of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. In the past he served the offshore industry in the UK and the USA as navigation and positioning specialist and more recently, he served the private sector in a series of surveying and transportation engineering projects under the same capacity. His principal areas of research include engineering surveying, navigation and precise GPS positioning. His research expertise are recent developments on emerging positioning technologies and GNSS augmentations within the IAG as a Driver for ITS Applications.

Prof. Wu Chen

Prof. Wu Chen

Prof. Wu Chen joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2000 and currently is a professor and the Head of the Department of Land Surveying and Geoinformatics, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has been actively working on GNSS related research for over 30 years and has been working on a large number of research projects funded by universities, governments, and industries. His main research interests are Geodesy and Geodynamics, Seamless positioning technologies, indoor positioning, navigation and integrity, GNSS positioning and applications, system integration, GNSS performance evaluation, regional GPS network, wireless sensor network positioning, and Airborne Lidar applications. He has published over 300 technical papers in different journals and international conferences, submitted over 30 technical reports to various organizations, granted or filed more than 10 patents.

Prof. Dr. Walter Timo de Vries

Prof. Dr. Walter Timo de Vries

Prof. de Vries' research interests include smart and responsible land management, urban and rural development, public-law ownership restrictions (PLR) and capacity development for land policy. He is currently supervising several PhD students working on spatial development strategies, land tenure, spatial justice, nomadic-pastoral land tenure and land consolidation. He is working on a theory and framework for "Human Geodesy". Prof. de Vries studied geodesy at the TU Delft (1988) and received his doctorate in Rotterdam. He worked for international projects in Asia, Africa and South America, until 1994 at UNITAR in Geneva and from 1994 to 2015 at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente. In 2015 he was appointed to his chair at TUM. At TUM he is currently Director of the Masters and PhD programs in Land Management and Land Tenure, Dean of Studies for the Geodesy and Geoinformation programs and Academic Coordinator of TUM.Afrika. He is a member of the German Geodetic Commission and a member of the Bavarian Academy for Rural Development.

Sr Dr. Mohd Razali Mahmud

Sr Dr. Mohd Razali Mahmud

Sr Dr. Mohd Razali Mahmud is a Professor at the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Surveying and Mapping Sciences from the North East London Polytechnic in 1986, Master of Philosophy in Surveying Science from University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1992 and Doctor of Philosophy in Surveying from University College London in 1999. He was a former Vice-Chairman and Board member of FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers from 2001 until 2014. He was the former Dean of Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate, and the former Head of Geomatic Engineering Department, UTM. Currently, he is the Chairman of FIG Commission 4 for the term 2019-2022. He is a Registered Land Surveyor with the Land Surveyors Board, Malaysia.

Dr. Ir. Sander Oude Elberink

Dr. Ir. Sander Oude Elberink

Associate Professor, dr. ir. Sander Oude Elberink graduated as a Geodetic Engineer from Delft University of Technology in 2000, and finished his PhD on the Acquisition of 3D Topography in March 2010 at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth observation (ITC) Enschede. His research was part of the project '3D Topography' which received the RGI Innovation Award in the category Science in 2007. From September 2009 Sander holds a position of assistant professor at the department of Earth Observation Science (EOS), Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC), University of Twente, the Netherlands. He is currently coordinating and teaching Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning in MSc Geoinformatics and MSc Spatial Engineering. He is coordinator of joint Educational Programme with IIRS, Dehradun, India. Sander is a member of editorial advisory board, ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. He was a co-investigator of W4C consortium.

Programme

The symposium will be held from 30th November to 1st December 2022. On Wednesday, 30th November 2022, from 9.00 am onwards, the programme will be commenced with the inauguration along with the keynote speech followed by technical sessions.

Publication Opportunities

The abstracts submitted and presented at the conference shall publish in the Journal of Geospatial Surveying upon the recommendation of the respective evaluation panel of the session, and acceptance by the editorial board of the journal after its reviewing process.
